This course aims to teach Engineering students the technical English they
need to read and speak numbers, units, equations, and other technical
expressions which they frequently encounter in their everyday academic or
professional life. Students will be able to practice giving technical
descriptions, explaining graphs and diagrams, and describing processes.
Students will also learn a range of English skills, such as pronunciation
and vocabulary learning, as well as study skills, such as dictionary use,
in order to become more independent users of English. In addition to
technical English, students will be able to develop their confidence and
fluency through speaking on familiar topics in small groups. Taking this
course prior to English Presentation for Engineers will give students a
smooth transition to the autumn course. At the same time, it will give
students confidence in dealing with numbers and technical expressions in
front of others and help them prepare for presentations at international
conferences. Students have the choice of taking this once-a-week course
on either Tuesdays or Fridays.
