The main objective of this class is to develop in the students the
ability to analyze any mechanical system in a simple and logical manner
and to apply to its solution a few, well-understood, basic principles.
First the basic concepts of Newtonian mechanis will be reviewed. Next,
basic theories will be presented by applying them to systems of particles
and then to idealized bodies such as rods and disks, and finally more
general rigid bodies and systems of rigid bodies. On the development of
the course, vector analysis will be frequently employed becaue this
approach leads to more concise derivations of the fundamental principles
of mechanics and makes it possile to analyze many advanced problems in
kinematics and kinetics.
It is assumed that the students taking this class will have the academic
maturity of graduate students in engineering fields, especially on engineering
mechanics, i.e., statics and dynamics.
